Company Background

ADA specializes in the development and manufacturing of lithium ion (and beyond Li-ion) batteries and ultracapacitors for the Defense industrial base, including DoD customers and OEMs/Tier 1s. Over the years, ADA has engaged strategic DoD customers across the Department of the Air Force (DAF – USSF and USAF), Army and Navy. Our innovative safe, wide-temperature range, and high-rate zero volt technology (Safe Li-IonTM) has current and potential customer across several military and commercial applications.

Our solutions provide more than a 50% increase in energy, a 5X improvement in power, a 40-50% reduction in both weight and volume (depending on application, system design and operating conditions), and enhanced safety features including 0V storage and improved electrolytes. Whenever possible, our raw materials are sourced and domestically to strengthen supply chain resilience. Some examples of our expertise are summarized below:

  • Safe Li-Ion™ Technology

    • ADA’s Safe Li-Ion™ Cell technology offers high rate capability and utilizes a high safety chemistry that enables 0V storage capability. These cells are engineered to deliver a long cycle life at a 15C rate and capable to operate in extreme low-temperature environments .

    • Safe Li-Ion™ Cell Level Testing (demonstrated in 3.5Ah pouch cell format):

      • External Short Circuit: Cells withstand short circuits as per S9310 standards, showing a maximum temperature of 62°C, significantly below traditional cell thresholds.

      • Overcharge/Over-discharge: ADA cells maintain performance even when overcharged or over-discharged beyond standard voltage limits, delivering extra capacity without irreversible loss.

      • High-Temperature Test: ADA cells can sustain higher temperatures (up to 240°C) without triggering thermal events, unlike traditional cells that fail at around 150°C.

  • ADA Li-S Battery Pack vs. Standard 18650 Pack

    • ADA’s Li-S Pack offers a significant upgrade over standard 18650 battery packs, requiring only 13 cells compared to 128 COTS cells in an 8S16P configuration.

    • Key advantages include:

      • Volume: Less than 10% increase in volume compared to standard packs.

      • Capacity: 82% higher capacity, with the ADA Li-S Pack delivering 43.7 Ah compared to 24 Ah in standard packs.

      • Power: A substantial 82% increase in power output (1232W vs. 672W), making it ideal for applications requiring high energy density and performance.

  • ADA NMC Technology in sUAS

    • ADA’s NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide cathodes) technology, implemented in small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS), showcases remarkable improvements over Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) cells:

      • Total Pack Capacity: 76% increase, with ADA packs providing 10.5 Ah compared to 6 Ah from standard COTS cells.

      • Total Pack Energy: 70% more energy (451.8Wh vs. 266.4Wh).

      • Run Time: 76% longer run times, crucial for extended missions, with a 25A draw providing 25.3 minutes of operation versus 14.4 minutes with standard cells.

  • Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) for sUAS

    • The HESS offers a highly-customized battery solution for sUAS, designed to enhance both mission time and efficiency.

      • Mission Time at Low Power: Increases from 3.5 hours to 4.5 hours.

      • Mission Time at High Power: Dramatic improvement, from 1 minute to 5 minutes, representing a 500% increase.

      • Weight Reduction: A significant 45% reduction in weight, from 11 pounds to 6 pounds, without compromising on performance.
